Former England striker Gary Lineker has gone on the attack, criticising lawyers for attempting to boost their fees during the divorce process.
The comments come following Mr. Lineker’s split from his second wife. He was previously married to his first wife for 20 years.
Talking to the Radio Times, he said that: “Just generally speaking, it’s very easy to get married and very difficult to get divorced. And we know that lawyers try to manipulate it to make you spend more money and basically end up hating each other.”
He has also called for the whole process of divorce settlements to be simplified to a ‘mathematical equation’.
Of course, the divorce process is rarely that straightforward. Especially when you add children, business and overseas assets, property, complex tax structures, and jurisdiction issues into the mix. While Gary and his ex-wife are reportedly pleased with having used a website to save fees during the separation process, a word of caution is needed.
Many people are attracted to DIY divorces because they are marketed as a cheap option with “no forms” and “no court” involved.
However, DIY divorces can generate more problems than they solve. They are often unregulated, with no safeguards in place to ensure you are protected. Forms are very often incorrectly completed, which can lead to a magnitude of problems – for example, financial claims being left out of divorce petitions altogether. Wives, in particular, are often disproportionately affected by this.
Where children are involved, it is particularly important for families to have access to professional legal support to help protect the best interests of the children, and to salvage an amicable relationship with ex-partners with who there will be a lifetime tie.
By opting for a DIY divorce, separating couples with families risk matters getting messy further down the line, with children often feeling confused and upset if clearly defined agreements haven’t been reached.
It’s a shame that Mr. Lineker has had a bad experience. At Linder Myers, we would never condone any lawyer manipulating the divorce process to line their own pocket! Instead, our family lawyers always seek to encourage couples to settle their cases as amicably as possible, thereby reducing anxiety, stress, and costs.
Where the online divorce does go wrong, family lawyers are usually asked to unravel the mess. So, what might have seemed like a “cheap” and “quick” option could leave you with a very bitter (and expensive) taste in your mouth.
