- Nuvaring Claims
What is the NuvaRing?
NuvaRing is a combined hormonal contraceptive method in the form of a thin and flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina. Approximately 2.1 inches in diameter and made of transparent plastic it has the same appearance as a small jar lid. Once inserted the ring is left in place for a period of three weeks with a one week break before a new ring is used. Intended for one use only, the ring operates in a similar way to the Pill, gradually releasing hormones (oestrogen and progestogen) into the bloodstream to prevent ovulation.
Claiming a success rate in excess of 99%, since first approved, millions of woman have used the contraceptive ring to prevent pregnancy instead of oral contraceptives.
First hitting the U.S market in 2002, over 1,000 users in the states have now filled lawsuits against Merck, the pharmaceutical company that makes the ring, claiming that it has caused them to suffer side effects.
According to several studies, women who use the NuvaRing are at an increased risk of stroke, developing blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Due to the failure to warn individuals of the risks associated with using the product, many women have sustained injuries or even died.
The British Medical Journal has published an article confirming that women who use the Nuvaring have a 90% increased risk of developing blood clot symptoms in comparison to women who take traditional oral contraceptives.
NuvaRing has been available in numerous countries around the world since 2001, but became generally available in the UK from April 2009. In the United Kingdom, the product is supplied by Organon Laboratories Ltd to the National Health Service. Still available here in the UK on the NHS, many women were not warned of the increased associated risks associated with using NuvaRing many now have a potential claim for compensation.
