MPs issue carbon monoxide warning
The All-Party Parliamentary Gas Safety Group (APPGSG) has produced a new report called Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. It has been published in a bid to raise public awareness of the deadly gas. There have been concerns as to a “lack of awareness and under-reporting masks the true number of incidents and fatalities” resulting from the incomplete burning of fuels such as gas, petrol and charcoal.
The report suggests that there are more than 50 fatalities “from a variety of sources” in England and Wales each year according to Department of Health. There were two deaths on campsites that took place in 2011 and a further incident where a family of five, overcome by fumes, were rescued from a tent.
The report makes many recommendations including those selling barbecues and other camping equipment include carbon monoxide warning notices at the point of sale. In addition it highlights the benefits of carbon monoxide alarms. These are now fitted to all National Caravan Council-approved caravans and motorhomes since September last year.
What to do if you believe that you may have been affected
If you suspect that you may have been exposed to Carbon Monoxide, it is important that you seek immediate medical attention. Ideally a blood test, preferably within 1-2 hours of the exposure stopping. Carbon Monoxide leaves the blood stream very quickly. This is not essential but does assist when bringing a claim.
If there is no blood evidence then we will pursue a claim on the basis of evidence of sustained ill health (e.g. usual Carbon Monoxide symptoms) and the fact that this can be closely related to periods of time you have spent in the property.
In addition to seeking immediate medical attention you will also need to immediately switch off the source of the gas. It is important that you have your appliance checked by a specialist engineer and retain copies of any documentation following the inspection.
