Hip implants putting patients health at risk
Medical regulators are considering new evidence about DePuy hip implants and their safety.
The hip replacement parts fitted in tens of thousands of patients are being investigated amid fears that they may be poisoning the individual concerned.
Surgeons have outlined a failure rate of nearly 50% of the implant some 6 years post surgery.

The problem is occurring with all-metal implants, when friction between the components causes tiny metal fragments to break off. Doctors say that the metal fragments could be toxic to the kidneys and could also inflame tissue around the bone, destroying muscle.
The British Orthopaedic Association have suggested in a letter to surgeons that only 41% of the patients affected had applied to be reimbursed for their treatment by DePuy.
