GP failures

General Practioners (GPs) will see patients more regularly than in any other medical setting. They are perhaps less likely to get sued than their other hospital counter-parts.

Most GPs will be familiar with patients and often their families. They are the first port of call and often the important task for GPs is to ensure an early diagnosis or early referral in relation to appropriate investigations.

Our of hours services

Some issues arising out of general practice may occur by reference to an out of hours doctors service. There is sometimes a lack of continuity in relation to care provided by the GP who may be familiar with the family and by the out of hours service doctor who may not be.

Other common GP complaints

Some GP aspects that are often put under the microscope include:

  • initial assessment of presenting symptoms
  • obtaining full and adequate histories
  • co-ordination of secondary care services
  • referral to secondary care services
  • general medical advice
