Two brothers have received damages from the Royal Liverpool Hospital who admitted poisoning them with iron over a 25 year period.
Liam and Paul McNeely suffer from Pyruvate Kinase deficiency, a rare form of Anaemia, and received blood transfusions at the hospital. It was discovered that their organs were storing too much iron from the treatment they were given. The hospital admitted liability.
In 2001 the brothers were diagnosed with iron overload. The brothers required daily visits from district nurses to reduce their iron levels.
Liam now suffers from diabetes and osteoporosis. Paul requires constant help from carers and his parents. The settlement will enable them to obtain the care they need.
Mr Chu, Consultant Haematologist at the Hospital said: “changes in national practice and guidelines in the last decade mean there are now additional safeguards in place to ensure this does not happen again.”
